Preparing for your senior session

Senior photos are a huge deal, and I want to make sure you have the best experience. Here’s some helpful information to help you prepare for your session:

What to Wear

  • I want you to choose outfits that reflect your own style, while also selecting pieces that are well-suited for photos.
  • My top recommendation would be to avoid neon as it tends to look terrible in photographs (and makes skin tones look terrible too).
  • I would also avoid logos or graphics as they can be distracting.
  • It’s essential to try on everything before the session to ensure it fits well and is comfortable. Be sure you pick options that are easy to sit in and move around.
  • If you need help with outfit selection, I’m here to assist you. Feel free to text/email photos for input.
  • It’s completely fine to bring extra options to the session, and we can pick the best choices for each location.
  • Pinterest is always great for inspiration.
  • Be sure anything you bring has been pressed or steamed. Wrinkly clothes are very noticeable in photos.
  • Most seniors wear anywhere from 2-5 outfits during their session.
  • Adding and removing layers is a quick and easy way to change up the look for even more variety.
  • Don’t forget about accessories! Jewelry, hats, and scarves can add a lot to your look.
  • Be sure to bring proper undergarments that can’t be seen under your outfits.
  • Your shoes will also be visible in many of the images, so ensure they are clean, in good condition, and coordinate well with your outfit.

Hair and Makeup

  • Getting a fresh haircut a few weeks before the session is a good idea! It’s best to stick with a style you know works well for you rather than trying something new at this time.
  • I would also avoid tanning and spray tans.
  • Be sure your nails are clean and trimmed.
  • Avoid glittery/shimmery makeup.
  • Don’t stress over breakouts. Your images will be retouched!

What to Bring

  • Makeup for touch-ups, a brush, hairspray, a small mirror, and other essentials.
  • Anything you might want to incorporate into the photos (sports gear, a handmade quilt, a favorite book, your dog…this list is endless!)
  • Snacks and water.

Rescheduling

  • Weather conditions play a big role in the success of a session. If it’s extremely hot, cold, windy, rainy, or overcast, we may need to consider rescheduling. If the weather is expected to be a significant factor in the day’s success, I recommend rescheduling the session for a new date.
  • In case of illness or injury, I always recommend rescheduling. We want everyone to be at their best.
  • I try to keep at least one day open per week specifically for rescheduling, so even if my schedule is completely full, I can typically find a new date within a few weeks. While it’s often inconvenient for everyone to try and reschedule, sometimes it’s best not to have a “make it work” moment.

Other Tips

  • Most importantly, don’t stress! I’m here to help with whatever you need.
  • Each school has different yearbook requirements. Be sure you are aware of the requirements for your school and plan accordingly. Some have specific dress codes and a few require formal studio headshots.
  • Start thinking about locations that hold meaning for you, or activities and props you’d like to incoporate. I want to make this unique to you!
  • Get plenty of sleep before your session.
